Leoš Janáček / Jenůfa, Její Pastorkyňa (Jenufa, her stepdaughter)

EVENING SHOWS July 7 | July 10 | July 16 | July 18

Opéra in three acts
Libretto by the composer after Gabriela Preissová’s play Její pastorkyňa
First performance: Brno; National Theatre, January 21, 1904
Sung in Czech with English supertitles above the stage

The story of Jenůfa and her stepmother is set within the confines of a Moravian community where rivalry, jealousy and social control first lead to tragedy, but ultimately the strength of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness triumph. Leoš Janáček’s third opera, based on the powerful play by Gabriela Preissová, is best known as Jenůfa, but by giving it the subtitle Her Stepdaughter, the composer underlined the importance of the role of the stepmother Kostelnička. This iconic and demanding role will be taken on by audience favorite Brenda Harris—who will be joined by Joyce Castle as the Grandmother Buryjovka. Laced with folk traditions, Jenůfa has become an operatic masterpiece in part because its music glows from within. With the company premiere of this devastating, yet stunningly beautiful drama, DMMO presents the work that assured Janáček’s operatic fame.
