Opéra comique in five acts
Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille after Antoine-François Prévost’s novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut
First performance: Paris; Opéra Comique (Salle Favart), January 19, 1884
Performed in French with English supertitles above the stage

Jules Massenet wrote several stylish, witty and genuinely beautiful operas, but it is Manon for which he is best remembered today. Based on Prevost's novel L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, the opera tells the story of the impulsive Manon, who falls in love with the young student des Grieux. But since Manon also longs for luxury and excitement, she foolishly cannot resist when the rich nobleman De Brétigny offers to make her his mistress. Her choice between young love and the allure of life’s unavoidable temptations has made for a timeless tale, often retold through ballet, theatre and the visual arts. The role of Manon is one of the greatest lures for a singing actress, and audience favorite Sydney Mancasola returns to DMMO in the title role.
